Data Mine

My Data Mine

It is crazy to think about how everything you post on the Internet stays around forever. As soon as you update something on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram it will always be there. I remember when I was a in high school I would post anything and everything and I never listened to my mother. As soon as I entered into the career world, I realized I wish I never posted things I did before. I know am so caution of what I post because I know that future employers are able to search me and see anything they want. I started to only allow things to be tagged in my name unless I approve it. I wanted to make sure that if parents, students. employers, family and co-workers searched me they would not be disappointed.

Searching

I started to Google my name. The things that came up were crazy. Information I found was my name, birthday, address(s), parents names, sisters name, income and also people I

could know. At first I was like wow that is a lot of information!  The first site I used was Nuwber. On this site it said my age, previous towns, parents names and phone number. However, my phone number was from a long time ago and there were some location that I have never belonged too.

I then Googled my name. The first thing that popped up was my Facebook. However, I did not include my last name in my Facebook name so when I clicked on it, it then takes me to my married name. The next link was mine and my husbands wedding website which is current. It also showed that I am a Special Education Teacher for Chicago Public Schools. I imaged searched my name and out of all the images I only found 2 that relate to me.

I searched on Pipl. Pipl showed my possibly user names, my Facebook name that I created for no one to find me and also people that I am associated with. What caught my eye on this site would be the people I am associated with. I have not spoken to these people in YEARS!!! so I found it very strange that they would be on there.

On Radaris, I noticed that they have known as and other names there like Amando Georgiou and my mother. I obviously do not know who Amando is but I am curious is that because she has co-signed on many loans for me.

Now there are so many other sites that I have researched, but they all seem to come up with the same information. Now I understand that any one can google my name and more power to them, however I do not feel comfortable displaying screenshots of that type of information on my blog post.

Educate

The world of technology is growing faster and faster every day. I believe it is important to educate students about the importance about what they post online or even who they are friends with online. For instance, there is a teacher at my school who is Facebook friends with students. They are in the 7th or 8th grade, but in my opinion that does not need to happen. I then see my students look at their Facebook pages and then see who they are friends with and to be honest it shocked me. Some of the students and or students friends were posting things that obviously I wish they never did. I have a fear that this will haunt students and they will never be able to take it back. Now, when to educate students and whose job is it. I feel that as soon as students have access to internet they should be educated about what they foot print will look like in the future. I feel it is the parents job to educate their children about this, because it is ideal up to them when they allow their students to get a phone, have a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Comments

  1. Each year I feel as if teachers and students become a little bit more informed in terms of what they chose to post or not. As a general rule I don't think teachers should connect with students via social media until they are no longer students in the same building.

  2. I think teachers shouldn't be facebook friends with students either! Unless they create a professional class facebook account that allows everyone to use it as a communication tool and outlet.
I also agree with you that the parents do have a responsibility to teach their kids about the internet and how there is a permanent online presence that is being created. However, I also think its the teachers responsible to inform students as well because we are also with them everyday and see them grow, so we want to be the ones to remind them and help them out. Also, we use technology a lot in the classroom as well so we want to make sure we inform them about how we are helping them leave a positive online presence whether it's through blogging, twitter, etc!

  3. I like how you education us on technology and how much it is growing online. Information is becoming more and more visible and available. I found it interesting when searching my first name alone, Sarah Sobotka, Sarah M Sobotka, etc. that different pictures or more were coming up. I do like how parents should be teaching their children about the information displayed on the internet due to anyone being able to find your phone number and address nowadays.

  4. I am surprised you had that much luck with a few of these websites, I feel like I tried and they were taking forever and then they would be done loading and ask me to pay. I did not find my salary or any of my loans like you did. I will say though when I googled my name like you my address, relatives names, and a few other things showed up!

  5. Amanda-
I think everyone should be very cautious with what they post online as it has the potential to remain online even after you have removed it. For example, when posting pictures, the user is able to remove the post or to delete his/her account, but if someone saved the image, it would still be out there. Now that I have started my career path, I've made a personal decision not to include any staff members in my social media platforms. I've met employers who admit to have searched an applicant through social media to get an idea of their personality.
