Digital Map

My Digital Map

When I first began creating my digital map, I drew my visitor and resident lines and then personal and professional lines and then went to town searching on my phone. At first everything was in my resident and personal box and every icon was HUGE because when I was adding them I kept thinking, "Oh yeah I always use this app."  By the end, I had no back ground in this section. Then I had to stop and think about what David White said about what makes us a visitor and what makes us a resident. I also had barely anything in my professional sections. I had to really stop and think about what I use to help my students learn. Then it became filled with icons.

Personal

Like I said at first all my icons ended up in personal and resident. I had to stop and think, I use a lot of these icons help me in my professional life as well.First, I LIVE on Amazon, its so convenient, order online and you get it in two days! I use Amazon to order this for school such as markers, pencils, Velcro, anything you can think of. I also use Amazon for personal use that is why it is placed on the line between personal and professional along with Instagram, and Pinterest. Icons that I thought I was a resident for soon changed to being a visitor because there is no way for anyone to see what I do on the apps such as Dunkin' Donuts, Google Maps, Wedding Wire and the Weather Channel.

Professional

I was shocked to see that I barely had any icons in my professional side either. Then I started realizing I use a lot technology to help my students learn or to look for ideas to help them.  I absolutely love using www.teacherspayteachers.com to help find resources for my students. There are many free options available as well. I also use Super Teachers that requires a yearly subscription, but it is super easy to navigate and it also no that expensive. I also have a SMARTBoard in my classroom and using SMART Exchange is a great way to find lessons already made for certain topics. These three things all belong in my professional and either visitor of slightly resident side. As you can see my Class Dojo icon is extremely large. This is because I use this DAILY to track my students positive and negative behavior. I have this on the resident side because parents are able to log on at home and also track their students progress throughout the day. So I am not be interacting over the internet for everyone to see, I am still a resident because I do interact and communicate with my parents.

  1. Amanda-
After drawing my digital space map I was surprised to see that I had so many apps that I used. However, your map has even more apps than mine! In comparison to my digital space, it looks like you have a lot of overlapping apps that share a couple different quadrants. I suppose the reason as to why I don't have as many apps as yours, is because I try to keep track of what apps are downloaded on my phone and immediately delete them if I have no use for them. Furthermore, I strictly monitor my apps in the way that I have ones specifically for personal, professional, visitor, and residential uses.

    1. At first I was shocked to see I didn't use that many professional websites or apps, but then I had to think about how I use so many that I might not physically have on my phone and then I was happy to see how many I use. My personal made me think I spent so much time on the internet!!!

  3. Hi Amanda,
When I was reading your post, I noticed we sort of had the same reflection process going on. I looked at mine and thought about what I most used and tried to think of what I use to help my students. I also saw that you use Class Dojo with your students to monitor behavior. When I worked with middle schoolers last year I was able to have some experience working with this for a short time while one of the teachers tested it out. I definitely think it has to be implemented in a certain way for it to be effective.

  4. Amanda,

I noticed that you have MobyMax in your visitor section! That program is a huge hit and always talked about in our school wide meetings! How do you like using it with your students? We use it as an MTSS tool. I however, do not use it because we are in preschool! I also have many of the same icons in the resident section as well. The only one I do not have is Etsy! I hear good things about it but I have yet to use it! I also have a GPS and Netflix in my personal section! You seem like a great teacher because you use all these online technology programs with your students that is awesome! Your class must be very technology equipped! :)

  5. Amanda, I found your digital map super interesting. I am not a teacher with a classroom myself, but it was fun to learn about some of the different resources you use in and for your classroom. It's amazing that we're living in such a connected world today that parents can actually track their children progress while they are at school. It's interesting when we take the time to really look at what technology we're using and how we're using it - whether on a regular, daily basis or from time to time.

  6. Amanda, I love how you have you use a lot of technology in your professional life. As a teacher, I can see how you can make your lessons super interesting. I bet you keep your students active and focus with the apps you mentioned. You use your resources well as a professional and you also use plenty of technology in your personal life. After looking at your digital map I am stealing your Dunkin app idea!
