All About Me

Hello everyone!
Personal Photo

I cannot wait to start working together over these next 8 weeks! Let me tell you a little about myself. My Name is Amanda Georgiou, and I have been teaching for 4.5 years. I currently work at Cameron Elementary School in Humboldt park where I teach special education grades K-3.  I received my undergrad from the University of St. Francis in 2012.  I went to Dominican in 2015 and received my ESL endorsement.

Family-
I got married on June 2, 2018! I could not be more excited to start this new life journey together as husband and wife. We bought our very first home together last year and we have two Siberian Huskies, Skyler (white and red) and Mia (white and black). Skyler and Mia are both 6 years old. We got Mia about two years ago and it made our "pack" complete.

I have an older sister and a younger brother. My sister has two wonderful daughter Avery and Addison. (They are my flower girls and I cannot wait to see them in their dresses!) My brother is still in college and is working to become a pipe-fitter. I am very close to my parents and we often spend time having family game nights and dinner.

My Work-

I started working very young. I started working at McDonald's when I was 15. I continued working all through high school and even college-where I met my fiance. I also worked at Kohl's and still do on Sundays.

My first year out of college I was a paraprofessional. I learned so much from working in this position and was eager to learn more. I took a short maternity leave before I started subbing. In February of 2012, I was offered a position in CPS at Cameron.

My current classroom is a special education instructional classroom with grade K-3. I have wide ranges of academics, behaviors and social emotional needs.

Free time-

In my free time, I enjoy camping, laying by the pool, taking the dogs on walks and relaxing by the campfire. I like to craft and create DIY projects. I made most to almost everything for my wedding!

Hi Amanda, congratulations on your marriage! I'm sure this is both a very exciting time for you, but also very busy with not only planning for the big day but also wrapping up the school year. I'm very excited to work with you this summer and learn more about your experiences in special education and how they are both similar and different to my own. This is only my first year as a special education teacher, so I hope to learn from your experiences and continue to grow. Are you in the same classroom the entire day, or are your students included in general education classes as well? At the high school I work at we do not have a self-contained classroom, instead all students are included full time in the general education classes. However, I do have a resource room that my students attend instead of going to study hall.
I loved the pictures of your dogs and I'm also similar in the fact that I'm close with my family and enjoy crafting and creating DIY projects. I'm excited for this summer to have more free time to spend time doing these activities. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Katie,
Typically I am with my students all day for all subject areas. However, this year my students are a little higher so I am able to push them in for the whole group reading lesson and the entire math block. I usually pre-teach the math lesson so they have a better understanding and all continue to re-teach skills throughout the year.

  2. Amanda,
First off, how exciting that your wedding is coming up! It's great that you are able to make things for your own wedding. Your interest in crafting and DIY projects probably comes in handy when creating projects for your classroom. It definitely takes some creativity and quick thinking when working in SPED, so it sounds like you would be good with that. I am working as a special ed kindergarten aide, so we come from similar backgrounds. I also read in your post that you enjoy being out by the pool and walking your dogs (they are so cute, by the way). I have 3 dogs and I absolutely love being outside with them, getting some sun and having them lay with me in the backyard. Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

  3. Oh my goodness how are you able to focus with the wedding so close?! Good for you for continuing to take classes at such a busy time. I am located on the north side of the city but I taught for 21 years on the west side not too far from Humboldt Park so I generally know the area you are in. Looking forward to learning with you this semester!

  4. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You teach special education at the next level up as I work in an early childhood classroom. I'm eager to learn about your experiences with the slightly older children. Also, I've always wanted a Siberian Husky and yours are super adorable. Maybe if I move to a larger place. I'm super impressed you made most of the things for your wedding. That is amazing! I'm sure being crafty comes in handy while working in the classroom!

  5. Amanda!
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! How exciting! I absolutely love Huskies! They are the cutest ever. When I get a dog I want it to either be a Huskie or Golden Retriever! I myself also like crafting and DIY projects, i'm obsessed with my Cricut Machine! Lastly, congratulations on your new home! I bet it is nice and cozy!!!!
